How to Be a Great Ambassador

Four habits that turn a quick chat into a real connection.

Four habits that turn a quick chat into a real connection β€” and none of them is "know all the answers".

Great ambassadors aren't the ones with encyclopaedic knowledge of the prospectus. They're the ones prospective students feel they could actually be friends with. Be genuine, be kind, and keep the conversation flowing β€” that's most of it.

πŸ’¬ Keep it chatty

Find common ground early. Same country? Same language? Same course, or the same worry about choosing one? Ask what they're into outside study β€” and if the university has a club or society for it, say so. Those are the details that make a place feel real.

Don't be afraid to end a chat with a door open: "Message me any time if more comes up" is a small thing that brings people back.

🌟 Be authentic

Don't just share the highlight reel. If your first term was hard, or you nearly picked somewhere else, say so β€” and say what changed. Honesty is what makes you believable, and a prospective student who hears "it was tough at first, here's what helped" trusts everything else you say.

πŸ“± Treat it like WhatsApp

Short bursts beat long paragraphs. Reply the way you'd reply to a friend: a couple of lines, then wait for them. Nobody reads a wall of text on their phone.

Take the initiative too. If someone hasn't written back in a week, a quick "Hey, how's the decision going?" is welcome, not pushy.

⏱ Respond quickly

You know the feeling when someone leaves you on read for three days. Don't be that person. πŸ™‚

If you can't answer straight away, acknowledge the message anyway: "Good question β€” let me check and get back to you tomorrow." A fast "I'm on it" is worth more than a perfect answer two days late. Aim to reply within a day; within a few hours is better.

πŸ™‹ When you don't know

Say so, and point them the right way. "I'm not sure about the exact entry requirements β€” that's one for admissions, and my university contact can jump into this chat to answer it" is a great answer. Your university admin can see the conversation and reply directly.

✨ In short

Be genuine, be kind, reply fast, and keep the conversation going. That's how a simple chat becomes the reason someone chooses your university.
