How to be a Great Ambassador

Tips and guidance on how to best represent your institution as a Student Ambassador.

It’s great to see you signed up to be an ambassador for your school! 🎉

But now you might be wondering: what makes someone a really great ambassador? Spoiler: it’s not about having all the answers or being the loudest voice in the room. It’s about being real, building connections, and making prospective students feel like they’re chatting with a future friend.

Here’s how to shine in your role and make a lasting impact.

💬 Keep It Chatty

As a current student, you bring the university to life by providing genuine advice on the student experience. Your goal is to make prospects feel like part of the family:

  • Life experiences: Find out if you share any similarities. Are they from a similar part of the world? Do you speak the same languages? Did you enjoy the same subjects at school?
  • Hobbies and interests: Ask them what they enjoy doing. Can they develop these interests at your college? Do you have things in common?
  • Stay connected: Encourage them to keep in touch. Suggest following the university on social media, checking out content you’ve created, or popping back on Tribe for another chat later on.

🌟 Be Authentic

You're not here to give a sales pitch. Don’t just share the highlight reel—be honest about the ups, the downs, and everything in between. Your personal stories and "not-so-glamorous" bits make your experiences relatable and reassuring. That honesty is exactly what helps prospects picture themselves walking in your shoes.

📱 Treat it like WhatsApp

Think of your Tribe conversations as ongoing dialogues rather than formal email exchanges.

  • Keep it light: Break up your messages into shorter, chatty bursts rather than lengthy paragraphs.
  • Be proactive: Some students are natural talkers; others need encouragement. If you haven’t heard from a student in a while, check in! Wish them luck on exams or share a quick tip on preparing for university life—just like you would with a friend.

⏱️ Respond Quickly

We all know the "pain of the two blue ticks"—when a message is read but ignored. Try to avoid putting students through this on Tribe. If you don't have an answer right away and need to do some research, that’s perfectly fine! Just send a quick note to let them know you’ve seen their message and will be back in touch soon with more info.

✨ At the end of the day, it’s about being human. Be genuine, be kind, and keep the conversation flowing. That’s how you turn a simple chat into a genuine connection.
